William Curtis is an experienced professional artist whose signature style offers

an “extremely realistic” painting style which is described as masterful. 

 

His compositions are drawn from the American experience, African American experiences, and African themes.  For his artwork, Curtis’s primary forms of media include oil, watercolor, and graphite.  His most recent entries in various exhibitions have resulted in award winning recognition from the Saint Louis Watercolor Society, the Missouri Watercolor International, the University City Art Association and the St Louis Artists’ Guild.  In addition, Curtis and his artwork have been featured in books, magazines, and newspapers.

 

 

EXHIBITS

In the greater St. Louis metropolitan area, in both group and “one man” shows, Curtis's artwork has been displayed at the Creative Art Gallery, St. Louis Artists’ Guild, Portfolio Gallery, Garrett Gallery, the  Black World History Museum, the Schafly Public Library Gallery, University City Library Gallery, Lincoln University in Missouri, Scott Air Force Base and the Heritage Museum at Jefferson Barracks in St. Louis. During the 1960’s while serving in the military in Europe, Curtis exhibited his work in Paris, France and Germany.  When he returned to the United States, his work was exhibited in cities across the country including Chicago, Kansas City, Alabama, North Carolina, Atlanta, and St. Louis.  

 

Over the last two decades, Curtis has completed three extensive series: "The Daughters of Hue" (18 oil paintings and drawings); "Life Images in Senegal" (17 paintings and 6 drawings); and "Purple Hearts: A Tribute to Tuskegee Airmen" (murals), consisting of 18 oil paintings and several watercolors.

 

 

AWARDS

William Curtis’s entries in various juried exhibitions have resulted in award winning recognitions from the Saint Louis Watercolor Society, the Missouri Watercolor International Society, the University City Art Association, and the St. Louis Artists’ Guild.  Paintings which were

selected for juried shows include:  the Beaux Art Guild Annual Shows- Tuskegee Institute in Alabama, the Science Center in Chicago, the National Museum of Science History in St. Louis. the Creative Art Gallery in St. Louis, and the Winston Churchill Gallery at Westminster College in Fulton, Missouri.

 

 

PUBLICATIONS

Artwork by Curtis has been featured in a series of publications through the years.  Books, newspapers and journals include:  Black Artists on Art: Volume 1Who’s Who Among Black Americans; New Day in Babylon: The Black Power Movement; Who’s Who in American Education; Studios and Workspaces of Black American Artists; Proud MagazinePsychology Today; and the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.
